" The football season has started, X-Factor is back on the TV and the nights are drawing in – sure signs that the darkness of Winter is fast approaching. Now is the time to consider your lighting, whether it be just to brighten up your room or you may be in the lucky position of extending your home.
Lighting can make or break a design scheme and needs to be a main consideration from day one of your plans. Lighting allows you to maximise the use of multi-functional spaces, which is a must if opting for open-plan living.
Many people today choose open-plan kitchen diners, where recessed spotlights provide lighting in the centre of the kitchen area, combined with under-cupboard lighting for the main work surfaces.
A pendant fitting can then be placed over the dining room table to create an intimate lighting effect. The combination of different lighting types provides the opportunity to change the mood of the room. This is achieved by having the different banks of lights on separate switches.
The use of a 5amp circuit allows you to instantly create ambience and drama on the flick of a switch or the turn of a dimmer. It works by connecting all the lamps in a room to the same circuit and therefore are all controlled by one switch.
The lighting scheme should complement the furniture and fabrics of the house. A piece of art on the wall, or even your curtains, can become a feature using spotlights to emphasise the detail. Decorative lighting can be displayed as artwork in its own right.
Then of course there is the whole argument of protecting the environment. Clever use of low-energy lighting provides a great opportunity to reduce your energy consumption and your overall carbon footprint leading to a better environment, not only in your house but for the planet as well.
Whatever type of lighting you desire must be incorporated in to your overall design in the early stages as the relevant wiring needs to be placed in the correct positions at first fix - before any walls and ceilings are plastered. Don’t worry if you are renovating as a good qualified electrician will solve all your problems electrically speaking that is.
There is so much choice out there for lighting – make sure you make the right one and when choosing your lighting scheme HAVE FUN! "
